The borscht is nearly as good as my mother's, which is very high praise as anyone who has been to my house knows. But actually, the food is apparently all homemade and it shows as it is the closest to authentic russian food as I have ever had in a restaurant. The pelmeni were also fantastic, perfectly cooked, good meat too! Served in a traditional little ceramic pot thing with butter and sour cream on the side, it was delicious.
That on its own would have been enough for five stars but on top of this, it was less than $15 everything including! The only other meal that cheap that is filling, delicious, and tastes like home cooking is actual home cooking. And the lady behind the counter who also served us was really nice, and made me feel like I was actually at home.
I'm definitely coming back to this place to have tea and desserts but I wouldn't hesitate to get that awesome lunch there either! -

A real treasure in Waterloo! My husband were visiting from Texas and came upon this great place. As world travelers, we appreciated the authentic flavors. Everything is made fresh in their kitchen. Great options for vegetarians.

The place may be hard to find as they do not have a business sign up- but it's right beside Moksha Yoga in uptown Waterloo.
We came uptown for hot pot once and a friend of my made sure we drove by this place for their Napoleon cakes. However, by the time we got there, the place has already been closed. She then spazzed a good 5 minute on how awesome the cake and food at this mini Ukrainian restaurant were. So as a result, it got me pretty interested, and I made a mental note to check this place out in the near future.
One morning after yoga, I stopped by the place. The store was owned and operated by an Ukrainian lady. Its very clean, and has this very calm/ serene feel. Upon stepping into the store, the place seems to emphasize more on pierogis and soups.. so maybe I'll come back to try that one day...
The Napoleon cake is indeed good and the portion can definitely be shared amongst 2-3 ppl. -

I'm from Ukraine originally and could attest to the quality of the food at this place. Tried cherry perogies and pelmeni - the best I've tasted in years! Highly recommended!
